LIGHT Support System

LISS - Light Support System 2020

WHY?  Tiszaadony is a small village in Eastern Hungary close to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border. It is amongst the most underdeveloped subregions of the country, affected by lack of job opportunities, infrastructural backwardness and extreme poverty. As a result, many of the housing units do not have access to public utilities or even if they do, the residents cannot afford to pay the bills. In some cases, since they cannot afford neither electricity, nor candles, the only solution is to burn clothing received as social aid. Being confronted with this reality, I was determined to make a change in the quality of life for the locals.

WHAT?  My concept is based on a light distribution system that can provide light to those in need, in a sustainable, and verifiable way, after a first installation supported by public funds.

HOW?  Under the LISS system residents can rent a lamp from the ’light tree’ installed in the village. When the battery of the lighting equipment is dead they can’t be used for anything else, however instead of throwing it away, the residents are incentivized to return it to the ’tree’ for recharging so that they can use it again afterwards. The units of the light tree are made of recycled material and the light tree is powered by solar energy, thus the entire system is self-sustainable and environmentally conscious. The shape of the lamps was designed to be adaptive to different types of usage.
